Young Alumni Awards

The Young Alumni Award honors students/graduates of the last decade for exceptional achievements in career, public service and/or volunteerism that brings honor to the College. Recipients should have adhered to standards of moral and ethical conduct that would cause the College to be proud to present the award to the recipient as a role model for students and other alumni.

Selections by the Awards Committee are not subject to vote by the total Board of Directors. All nomination forms/materials should be submitted online or be on letter or legal size paper and easily-reproducible form. Nominations cannot be considered without supporting documentation. The Alumni Biographical Form is required for each nominee before consideration by the selection committee and the recipient is required to attend the President’s Reception.

Amira Ali


Amira Ali

Amira Ali graduated this past May with an Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. She also received a Bachelor’s Degree in Arabic Studies from Cairo University.

Amira received many awards and honors while at PCC, including the Academic Excellence Award, Development Studies Award and the State Academic Excellence Award. Amira was the only Pitt Community College student to earn the PCC Scholar of Global Distinction during the 2017-18 Academic Year. This program is designed to help students become global citizens.

Amira is currently a part-time teacher at Children’s Campus of Greenville and is a private tutor for 4-10 year old children.

Her nominator says “her participation and desire to make a difference continues through her service to her community. This “Ali Brand” of service promotes the creative and global knowledge and awareness of young people in her community through her volunteer coordination at the Oakwood School, including being the present chair of the International Festival at the school.

Robert DeGiosio


Robert DeGiosio

Robert graduated from Pitt Community College in 2013 with a degree in Respiratory Therapy. He maintained 4.0 GPA and made Dean’s list throughout his enrollment.  Robert excelled at the University of North Carolina Charlotte and graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy. He holds multiple certifications and licenses. Robert is an Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner at Vidant Medical Center. He served as a tutor at PCC. From 2003- 2009 Robert served as an Aircraft Fuel Systems Mechanic in the United States Air Force. Robert was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Justin Smith


Justin Smith

Justin Russell Smith is the owner and operator of Smith Funeral & Cremation Services in Greenville, which opened in July 2011. He graduated from Pitt Community College in 2003 with a degree in General College. Smith received an Associate in Applied Science in Funeral Service Education in 2004 from Fayetteville Technical Community College. He returned to Pitt Community College in 2005 and received an Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration in 2006. Prior to opening his own Funeral & Cremation Service, Smith was employed by Wilkerson Funeral Home from 2001-2011.

Smith is a member of the Winterville Chamber of Commerce, the Pitt-Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Gideon’s International, University Church of God, UCOG-Men of Action. He is married for Rhapsody Smith. They have two children a 3-year old daughter and a seven-month old little boy.

Krissy Johnson

Krissy served as Student Government Association president for two years. She received an HST degree in 2003 and another degree in University Transfer in 2004.

After graduating from PCC, Johnson completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at ECU in 2006 and a Master’s in the same field a year later. She is now a Social Worker at the Harnett County Department of Social Services and teaches at Campbell University as an adjunct professor.

“Krissy is an exceptional individual with a big heart, keen analytical skills, and passion for Pitt Community College,” said Dr. Ray Taylor, PCC’s HST Department Chair. “Krissy is grounded in knowledge of herself, and she has a strong desire to help others. She will continue to be an outstanding alumnus of Pitt Community College.”

Stephen Morris


Stephen Morris

Steven Morris was a graduate of the AAS Polysomnography program in 2008. “From the first night during his clinical internship, Steven demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge for Polysomnography. I was quite surprises her knew so much.” stated James T. Hundley, Clinical Site Instructor for PCC.

Passing his RPSGT Exam the first time led him on an unheard of carrier track. He went from a Technologist to an General Manager in 2 years and 6 months. Hundley credits Morris’ success to the knowledge and experience he obtained through completion of the AAS Polysomnography Degree program here at PCC.

Edward Kelley Smart


Edward Kelley Smart

Kelley graduated from PCC in 2002 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Information Systems Networking. He was a student ambassador, a recipient of an academic excellence award, and student response speaker at his graduation. He is an ordained minister with the Original FWB church. Kelley had continued his education be completing a BS degree in Religion at Mount Olive and he is currently pursuing a Masters in Biblical Studies at Campbell University Divinity School. He is an active volunteer in hi church as well as Relay for Life, Gang Awareness Counselor, and mentor for PCC Students.
